More on Patreon!

Summary of an article testing relationship between overhead press, back squat and split jerk performance.

Who

32 (20 males, 13 females) competitive (regional and national level) Olympic weightlifters (Spain).

Design

Experimental study.

Outcome measures

  • overhead press 1RM (repetition maximum)
  • back squat 1RM
  • split jerk 1RM

Main results

Upper body or lower body more important for maximal split jerk performance? - Infographic

  • 1RM overhead press and 1RM back squat were very strongly correlated with 1RM split jerk performance for both, males and females.
  • Split jerk performance can be predicted from:
    • for males: 1RM split jerk performance = -0.4566 + 0.6558(back squat performance) + 0.2100(overhead press performance)
    • for females: 1RM split jerk performance = -3.617 + 0.5814(back squat performance) + 0.4809(overhead press performance)

Take home message

For a clinician & coach
Upper body and lower body maximal strength predict maximal split jerk performance. Back squat 1RM and overhead press 1RM can be used to predict split jerk 1RM.
For a parent
Back squat 1RM and overhead press 1RM can be used to predict split jerk 1RM.
For an athlete
Back squat 1RM and overhead press 1RM can be used to predict split jerk 1RM.
